From Citypedia London
The Tower of London is a famous landmark in central London, close to Tower Bridge. Its White Tower was historically used to house upper class prisoners.
The most well known prisoner of the Tower of London is Elizabeth I who was imprisoned for a time in the Tower during her sister Mary's reign.
The use of the tower as a prison led to the phrase "sent to the Tower" meaning "imprisoned".
